For the first 2 years of the list we had kept it a closed list, meaning that
only subscribers to the PIUG list could place messages on the list. This
screening helped to automatically exclude junk mail messages that get sent
to thousands of lists everyday.
If the level of junk mail rises, we can close the list again (it is a
relatively simple option). Then only subscribers will be able to post
messages and the junk mail problem will almost certainly cease. We'll have
to seek some other solution for the few subscribers that are inconvienienced
by this (because their messages are also bounced out).
For now we'd like to keep the list open to all.
