>With all of the recent discussion of information sources regarding patents,
it gives us restrained joy to be able to announce that our jointly-authored
article on patent information has just appeared in the Kirk-Othmer
Encyclopedia of Chemical Technology, 4th Edition, Vol. 18, pp. 102-156. The
final product is not what we had hoped it would be. Unfortunately the
proofs required a considerable number of changes, and a misunderstanding
regarding deadlines resulted in their omission. To correct one howler, Ref.
3 should be the proceedings of the 1984 Sheffield Conference, edited by John
Barnard; the patent number shown as Ref. 3 is simply the source of the
Markush structure in Fig. 3. While we wish we had been able to clean up
this and other points, we believe you will find the article to be a useful
resource.

>We wish we were in a position to supply reprints to all interested
individuals, but our supply is VERY limited. We would note that eventually
the article should be searchable online via Dialog file 302, which is
currently up to Vol. 11 of the 4th Edition of K-O.
