biotech patent questions/proteins & cloning

Hello -
I'm searching in unfamiliar waters and I'm wondering if someone can
post some advice.
I have to search for patents for the use of specific proteins in
assays. I'm told that if the assignee has produced the protein
through cloning, then the protein has likely been used in an assay.
My gut feeling is that I this is one of those nebulous searches in
which it would be easy to either miss answers or to get irrelevant
ones. One peer suggested that the specific protein name may or may
not appear in the claims or abstract. My search will involve specific
members of classes of proteins, and I wonder if the proteins are
always indexed with full specificity, or if Derwent might abstract
just the class name.
Does anyone have any information that they would like to share as
examples to watch out for? wording to look for? things to avoid?
I'm sure it would be valuable to many members on the listserv.
