Refs for Chemical Structure Searching? -Reply

Norman,
I'm not sure if there are any good general references. For my
personal needs, I refer to product documentation by the database
producers and vendors, and the JCICS articles (of which you authored
at least one). STN in particular has done a good job of documenting
their systems. There is the book by Wohlman, "Utilization of
Chemical Information," but the most recent edition of which I am
aware is the 2nd edition, from 1988, so its a little dated at this
point. However, I think a new book has come out in the past year
written by an Australian and published by the ACS, and covering
online chemical information systems, including structure searching.
Sorry I don't have a real reference. We don't seem to have this
latter book at Wyeth, or at least its not on the shelf. Thats
probably a good sign, since all good books disappear.

Folks,
Once again I am involved in Edlyn's course on pharmaceutial patent
searching. I am doing a one hour session on chemical structure
searching. I'd like to include some references that would be
helpful to those taking the course. I know of no source that
discusses this from the perspective of someone confronted with the
need to do such a search, but I not been involved in this area for
some time.

Last year I did provide some JCICS refs comparing MARPAT and MDARC,
but I'm looking for something more general.

Any suggested references for approaches/startegies to chemical
structure searching for patent-related purposes?

Suggestions on content would also be gratefully accepted.
