CALL FOR PAPERS
for a symposium by the Division of Chemical Information at the 214th
ACS National Meeting, September 7-11, 1997, Las Vegas, Nevada
#Recent Developments in Biotechnology Patent Information#
Patent information in biotechnology subject areas has traditionally
been more difficult to access than in purely chemistry areas for
several reasons. Partly this is because Chemical Abstracts has always
covered patents as routine data sources, but none of the major
biomedical indexing services has done so. Another major factor is the
legal aspect, that many biotech concepts were not considered
patentable material until about 15 years ago. Yet another factor is
progress in biology and molecular biology, in that many important
techniques, e.g., rapid sequencing of genetic material, or
computational methods, have only become feasible in the past 15-20
years. This symposium hopes to attract speakers who can talk on these
subject areas. We hope to have speakers from data providers, such as
patent offices, indexing services, and the online industry, on how
they are meeting the challenge of processing and disseminating
biotech patent information. Also of interest are information
scientists and lab scientists who are searching and using this kind
of information.
Submissions should be made on an ACS Abstract form, available from
www.acs.org/meetings/abstract/abinfo.html. Please contact the
organizer for further information. The deadline for submission is
April 30, 1997.
