We currently have QPAT available for end-users. We've only recently
started to offer this, so we don't have much feedback yet. I've used
it to dig around for "free" before getting online for a search, which
is useful. It can be slow, however.
Some of the scientists here also have SciFinder, though they don't often search
specifically for patents. One quirk with SciFinder is that you cannot search by
assignee. I had talked to the CAS help desk and was told they didn't expect much
of that kind of search by end-users, which I would disagree with. Very often
end-users are looking at specific companies, especially in the beginning stages
of a possible co-development project or if they heard someone from a specific
company speak at a conference.

Subject: End-user searching

Some of our research staff are requesting access to desktop searching of patent
databases, claiming that they had this capability in previous employment
locations. Does anyone on this list have any experience with end-user searching
of this type? If so, w
hat databases have you allowed clients to use? Have they been restricted to
Internet sources only or allowed access to any commercial databases?
Any experiences or points-of-view would be welcomed.
Thanks in advance,
Hilary Bates
