Just to underline the experience that has been reported with Alan Engel's
ISTA outfit and their Converted Kokai. I have used the service in several
instances recently, where the Chem Abs and Derwent abstracting and indexing
left me up in the air about what was really going on in a patent. (This all
has to do with superannuated rules which dictate, or seem to dictate, that
it is enough in a patent to abstract the claimed material. In the new world
of polymer technology, where the 'same' polymer as made by different types
of catalysis can be sharply different depending on the choice of catalysis,
it is totally inadequate in many instances to omit information on the method
of preparation of a polyolefin when that information is present in the
patent. If the properties are special, we absolutely must know how the
special properties have been achieved.)
That lengthy tirade is simply to say that in each instance when I've invoked
an ISTA Converted Kokai, I obtained a satisfactory answer to my question.
It might not have been in the most polished English, but it filled in the
gaps left by the abstracting service. Despite the modest price of Converted
Kokai I wouldn't want to have to use them every time I have a question about
CA and Derwent abstracts.....I'm using this information as feedback to both
organizations to try to upgrade their output. In the meantime, I'm happy to
be able to report that the ISTA product has been most useful.
