US Defensive Publications in CLAIMS

In a recent message, Stephen Adams raised some questions about
coverage of US Defensive Publications in the CLAIMS database. He
correctly indicated that 1968 and 1969 defensive publication
records in CLAIMS have been renumbered, according to the USPTO's
revised numbering scheme. Since we do have a record of the
original document numbers for the 1969 publications, we will add
these numbers to the corresponding CLAIMS records, in the
application number field, when the database is reloaded in 1996.
You should then be able to retrieve CLAIMS records corresponding
to the original defensive publication number by searching the
original number in the application number field (the patent
office had initially used the application number as the document
number).
Stephen also mentioned the possibility of searching by issue
date. You can determine the issue date from the document number
(the beginning of the document number is the USPTO Gazette volume
number), but the issue date field in these renumbered documents
currently indicates the correct year, but not the correct
month and day, e.g., 691231 for all renumbered 1969 defensive
publications. We will also add issue date information in a
future reload.
