These catchwords provide a focused access to the relevant codes as
assigned by the patent examiners, and are available for the /NCL,
/INCL, /NCLM, /INCLM, /NCLS, /INCLS, and /RPCL fields. The keywords
may be viewed with EXPAND in these fields, and may be used with
SEARCH in these fields to find additional relevant patents not
retrieved by either the full-text or the CAS indexing search. The
applicable national classification codes are listed with EXPAND and
the new +KT (keyword term) thesaurus relationship code. There is no
additional fee for using these catchwords with EXPAND or SEARCH in
USPATFULL.
The following brief transcript illustrates the use and value of
including catchword terms in a search to increase the
comprehensiveness of the results. L3 shows the included CAS indexing
provides additional relevant patents for chemical patents. Expanding
on the query term in the /NCL field indicates ZEOLITES (E4) is a
valid catchword and may be used to supplement the search results. E4
postings include those for E5-E9, which may be searched separately if
so desired. Expanding on E4 with the +KT relationship code shows the
5 specific classification codes that are related to ZEOLITES. All of
these classifications, along with all the narrower term codes, are
searched automatically using the +NT relationship code (L4). L5
shows using catchword terms can retrieve a substantial number of
additional patents.
Because the search was run in the /NCL field, many of these hits are
due to the secondary classification assignments (/NCLS). L7 shows
that even when the catchword search is restricted to just the main
classification assignments (/NCLM), a significant additional number
of relevant patents are retrieved.
