I think the problem Andy is having with his
search is based upon the fact that STN has
indexed patentee names in WPI as words in
sequence rather than bound phrases. You can
get rough statistical rankings for patentee
names only on systems that store patentee names
as bound phrases. Dialog and Orbit have bound
phrases for use in map/rank and get commands,
STN and Questel don't seem to have provided
that sort of thing. To combine your differing
company names, you have to be able to merge
items in your ranked sets and rerank them.
I don't try to do that sort of thing much,
and when I do I don't rely on the computer's
ranking for much. There are too many cases
where Derwent has recorded different forms of
a patentee name on the same record, which would
result in counting the record twice. But my
opinion is that Dialog is the only host that
comes close to giving a unified ranked set by
company name. Anyone done an analysis of the
results from the new InfoView program?
