Although I have no personal experience doing this, I would consider scanning
them, and using Acrobat Capture to convert them to PDF files, which will be
far smaller than TIFF images. They will retain their appearance, and also be
searchable, and with the indexing product, you could index the full text
across the documents. One interesting featureof Capture is that there is a
user controlled 'confidence level' feature for the OCR function, where if the
text is not understood at the desired confidence level, the bitmap of that
image PLUS a best guess OCR is saved.
