Withdrawn US patent numbers

During a Questel refresher training course an example was given of the
"FAMSTAT" command using US5299248 as the input patent number, which raised
an intersting issue for me. The displayed legal status information indicates
that this particular patent was withdrawn, and this is stated in Inpadoc and
the patent listed in the USPTO withdrawn patents list. However there is a
patent family in Derwent WPI consisting of the US patent and EP and PCT
equivalents.

This leads me to ask my US colleagues for their views on reasons for a US
patent being withdrawn and "all references should be deleted" as Inpadoc
puts it. Two additional US patents are listed by INPADOC as family members,
so is there a way of finding out whether these are continuations in part or
some other kind of continuation?

It also highlights for me the (probably obvious to many others) need to be
aware of legal status for US patents, and not just rely on their presence in
a patent family as indicating an in force granted US patent.
