Patent numbers in CAOLD

I support any moves to get patent numbers into CAOLD, whilst recognising
that this data is not easily available to CAS who have relied upon
author/assignee indexes for the pre-57 source.
I would like to point out that the Beilstein file on STN contains
substantial amounts of patent data, mainly comprising patent number,
assignee or inventor and (in most cases) a CAS accession number.
Regrettably, the current load of the file means that i) the PN field is
not suitable for cross-filing and ii) the CAS accession numbers are only
available as free text. But at least the raw data is there.
If Beilstein could be persuaded to reload their file, users could run a
sub-structure search, extract the CAS accession numbers and cross to
CAOLD to view the extensive older CA abstracts. This would not only
mean that CAS would not need to load the patent numbers, but it would
also get around the problem of no Registry Numbers in the old portion of
the file.
I also recognise that there will be times when users want to do a PN
search which is not structure-related, and hence would still support
efforts by CAS to load PNs directly into CAOLD.
