Dear learned PIUG colleagues,
In January of 2003, the below message was posted to the listserv
regarding Pakistani patents. Stephen Adams provided a very detailed
response (also below) and it seems that there was not an easy way to
locate this information as of 2003. I'm wondering if that has changed,
that is, where the H*ll can I find Pakistani Patent Information?
Please respond directly to me and cc the list as I don't receive all =
the
postings to the PIUG list.
Thank you and warm regards to all,
Julie

Dear PIUG,
Does anyone have information about the status of intellectual property
(patent) in Pakistan and about PK patents electronic search ?
I am afraid neither Inpadoc, nor WPindex and CAPLUS cover the patent
publications of this country !
Any information would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you very much

Dear Jean-Yves
The prospects are not good on this, I'm afraid. I have in the past
tried (and failed) to obtain a Pakistan patent document, even when the
publication number was known by virtue of the Pakistan Patent Office's
notice of grant to my employers! As you have observed, none of the
major bibliographic sources cover these documents, and I have to date =
no
evidence of a website or other electronic information sourced from =
their
patent office.
A quick check of the indexes of World Patent Information failed to
locate any articles discussing documents from this country (although
this was not an exhaustive check - if you have access to the journal,
you might like to check the section covering technical reports from
patent offices which appear every so often, cleared via WIPO and
reporting on such things as automation developments).
One issue to bear in mind is that, even if Pakistan documents did get
included into a multi-country database, it would not necessarily be =
easy
to locate them via other family members - Pakistan is not a signatory =
to
the Paris Convention and so no filings in that country should record a
foreign priority, enabling a family link to be established. Although
for filing purposes, Pakistan's membership of the WTO means that
reciprocal priority is now respected as if it was a Paris Convention
member, the priority data is - to the best of my knowledge - captured =
in
these cases.
I hope this helps to some extent - good luck.
