Job Description
   
Description
This position is in the DERBI Operations group which
is part of the Information Management Center (Library)
at Dow AgroSciences (DAS). The position is located at
the corporate headquarters in Indianapolis, IN. The
incumbent will work with a team of information
professionals and contractors to make internal R&D
information retrievable by end users using advanced
search software and image management (RetrievalWare(tm)).
Although the position is heavily involved in indexing
internal reports and leading special projects such as
indexing documents received from acquired companies,
it also involves training and supervision of the team
of contractors mentioned above.
        
Indexing involves reading technical/scientific
reports; comprehending and defining the major concepts
in the reports; and extracting and converting these
concepts into appropriate database fields (metatags)
based on internal guidelines and standardized lists.
Comprehensive and relevant database search results
generated by end users are dependent on the accuracy
of these activities.
 

 
Qualifications
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES (85%)

Responsible for indexing DAS and non-DAS (i.e.
acquired companies) technical/scientific reports
according to established guidelines

Responsible for overall supervision of contract staff.
Trains indexing contractors.

Ensures consistency of indexing by recommending and
documenting new/modified guidelines and standardized
lists

Ensures integrity of database by proofing entries,
determining and leading entry clean-up projects

On a global basis, promotes use of the internal
reports imaging and retrieval system and an internal
report cover page application by conducting advanced
training sessions, providing feedback, and publicizing
their features

Helps to design, test, and implement enhancements to
the retrieval system and cover page applications
including custom indexing taxonomies

Maintains and assigns internal codes for active
ingredients or other compounds for retrieval purposes

Oversees adherence of corporate Knowledge Management
standards and contributes content to the DERBI
Operations intra-company web site
        
SECONDARY RESPONSIBILITIES (15%)

Conducts complex searches of technical information for
end users using internal retrieval systems. May search
external databases such as the National Pesticide
Information Retrieval System (NPIRS)

Creates new system accounts and troubleshoots system
issues when necessary

EDUCATION:

Bachelors degree in chemical, agricultural or life
sciences, or chemical engineering, is required.

Masters in Library Science (MLS) highly desired.

Must have prior experience extrapolating major
concepts (indexing) from technical documents.

Must possess advanced skills in database searching,
including scientific bibliographic databases, and data
manipulation in applications such as Microsoft Excel

Must have strong analytical and planning skills and be
detail-oriented

Must be able to work with diverse user groups and make
effective presentations and other communications

Must be able to work independently and take initiative
in leading projects

Supervisory experience is preferred
