Using Japanese or Chinese to search US patent documents

Patent information users can now use terms from Japanese or Chinese IPC
schedules to search U.S. pregrant abstracts using Paterra's
Class-Expanded Patent Abstracts (patent pending).

"Class-expanded" means that the USPC and IPC codes that normally appear
in patent records have been replaced by their definitions and thus made
indexable. This means that users can search on classifications without
having to look up codes in the class schedules and then entering those
codes in specially formatted search fields.

The code definitions can be in a second language. Paterra has
implemented this feature using IPC schedules in Japanese and simplified
Chinese.

At this point, this service is developmental and covers U.S. pregrant
documents published since January 1, 2004. The service is free and no
registration is required.

Searches start from the following URLs:

Japanese: http://cxp.paterra.com/jp <http://cxp.paterra.com/jp>
Chinese: http://cxp.paterra.com/cn <http://cxp.paterra.com/cn>
English: http://cxp.paterra.com <http://cxp.paterra.com>

The following are URLs for sample searches on "optical effects" and
"nano*":

Japanese:

The Japanese and English search pages also provide links for setting up
RSS news feeds for searches. This provides an easy (and free) way to
set up weekly alerts based on search queries.

Notes on browsers:

Opera 7 ( http://www.opera.com/ <http://www.opera.com/> ) handles the
service best. No problems observed so far. Creating Newsfeeds is very
easy.
Microsoft Internet Explorer handles the service but has one annoying
bug: Japanese and Chinese characters are scrambled when the "Back"
button is used. Reloading the page fixes the characters. No problems
in English.
Firefox 1.0: Use for English only. Firefox handles Japanese and Chinese
characters, and the IE Back button problem is absent, but Japanese and
Chinese searches do not post correctly.
Netscape 7.1: English searches only. Cannot handle Unicode for Japanese
and Chinese.
