Rose Ann
Thanks to Evert for the explanation of using DPCI on STN to count patent
citations. One detail to add from me. As well as the Patent Number Count
Citing (PNC.G), shown in his example, you might also want to consider analyzing
the Derwent WPI Accession Number Count Citing (OSC.G). This number represents
the number of citing DWPI patent families - effectively counting "duplicate
citations" from family members of one DPCI record to another, only once.
A comparison of using the two forms of citation count analysis is given by
example here:
http://www.stn-international.com/training_center/patents/nfdpci.pdf
On page 5, note that while the top answer for Microsoft, 1692, is cited by 141
individual patents (left table) these come from only 114 patent families (right
table). I.e. a proportion of the 141 are patent family equivalent documents.

Dear Rose Ann,
To do this automatically, I would propose to use the Derwent Patent
Citation Index (DPCI) on STN. At the very bottom of this e-mail I have
included an example for you.
It is a rather straight forward solution which doesn't take much time. I
hope this helps.
Best regards,
