Dear Jo and PIUG colleagues:

There are many options in the area of patent-mapping software; our
offering is the Thomson Aureka platform (formerly available through
MicroPatent). It is a very reliable and popular patent mapping tool,
used in the United States and many other countries.

Aureka, the enterprise-wide, advanced analytic platform, has an
application within it called ThemeScape mapping. ThemeScape allows you,
the user, to visually depict a large set of patent (or other) documents
on a two-dimensional surface that resembles a topographical map. An
algorithm is run on the records being analyzed, categorizing them by
thematic concept, and then the themes and documents are plotted on the
map. Records of similar themes/topics are plotted near one another,
those of dissimilar topics are farther apart. The map gives you a
birds-eye view of your document set, so you can efficiently narrow in on
the most relevant records. You can also compare the patent portfolios
of competing companies, plotting and color-coding their records on the
map, as well as perform other functions.

In addition to patent mapping, Aureka lets you:

* Search the full-text of patents
* Organize and review your records
* Import non-patent literature (white papers, journal articles,
etc. - to also analyze or store by competitor, industry, etc.)
* Store your research, maps, and other analytical creations in the
Directory Tree, accessible by authorized members of your team or project
area
* Create a variety of reports
* Perform forward and backward citation analysis
* Collaborate with colleagues on project folders and research
* And much more

All of these functions are used to help with business and R&D decisions
such as:

* To build versus buy
* In or out license
* Determine competitive threats (or opportunities)
* Assess M&A possibilities
* And much more

Should you like more information about Thomson's Aureka, please contact
us in the US at 800.648.6787 or +1.203.466.5055 (ask for Anita Swanson),
or in Europe at +44 (0) 20.7424.2340 (ask for Susan Barclay). They will
put you in contact with the manager for your area, so we can discuss
your IP analysis needs and set up an Aureka demonstration for you.

Thank you for your attention to this and kind regards,

Laura
