*** Apply by August 15th ***
We are pleased to announce the availability through distance learning of
our fall 2005 introductory graduate chemoinformatics class, I-571
Chemical Information Technology, at Indiana University's School of
Informatics. Anyone who meets the requirements outlined below is
eligible to enroll - you do not need to be a current student at Indiana
University or another institution, nor do you need to be able to attend
the campus. We see it as an excellent opportunity for industry
professionals and students in other fields to have an introduction to
the principles and techniques of chemoinformatics.
The class is being offered as part of our new "Certificate in Chemical
Informatics" distance learning program. Students who complete the
Chemical Information Technology class along with three other
chemoinformatics classes (which will be held in subsequent semesters)
will be eligible for a Certificate in Chemical Informatics.
I571 Chemical Information Technology (offered in the fall 2005 semester
as INFO-I590 Topics in Informatics, Class number 27570) is a 3
credit-hour graduate class aimed at introducing students to the
fundamental informatics techniques for chemistry-related disciplines.
The class will cover a wide range of topics, including representation
and use of chemical structure information, computer-aided drug design,
3D visualization and computation, and handling of large volumes of
chemical information.
The class runs from August 29th - December 7th, 2005. Lectures will be
given Mondays and Wednesdays 9.30 am-10.45 am Indiana Time (Indiana
remains on Eastern Standard time throughout the year, which means in
effect that if you are not in Indiana, the class meeting time will
change by one hour when the rest of the US goes off Daylight Savings
Time in November). Lectures will be delivered using teleconferenced
audio, and a visual feed through a web-based delivery system. The only
equipment needed to participate is a telephone and a recent PC with
broadband internet connection. We will also videoconference the class to
classrooms in Bloomington and Indianapolis, and will be able to provide
archived video and audio feeds for access by students who are unable to
attend some lectures. Grading will be done through assigned coursework.
The I571 class is open to any U.S. resident with a bachelors degree and
some experience or training in chemistry or life sciences and
information technology. The course rate for the class is $679.65, plus a
$25 processing fee.
The class tutor, David Wild, has 14 years' experience in chemical
informatics, including a Ph.D. from the leading research center in the
field at Sheffield University, U.K. After obtaining his Ph.D. and a
postdoctoral study, he worked as a Senior Scientist at Pfizer Global
Research and Development in Ann Arbor for four years, before leaving to
start his own company, Wild Ideas Consulting. He is currently an
Assistant Professor of Chemical Informatics at Indiana University, as
well as an Adjunct Professor of Pharmaceutical Engineering at the
University of Michigan.
Indiana University's School of Informatics
(http://www.informatics.indiana.edu) has set its goal to be nationally
recognized as the foremost in the USA for excellence and leadership in
informatics programs, including undergraduate and graduate education,
research, placement and outreach. We recognize a great need and
opportunity for professionals trained in state-of-the-art information
technology and science with an emphasis on creative human applications.
It has active research and teaching programs in a wide variety of
applied informatics disciplines, including bioinformatics, chemical
informatics, laboratory informatics, social informatics, musical
informatics and human-computer interaction, and has just launched the
nation's first informatics PhD program.
