Hi,

Personally, using Excel to create a database would not be the way to go
for me, since there's never any guarantee that the binary format you use
is going to be supported in the near or even distant future.

Your best bet IMHO is to start with one or more sources of raw data,
e.g. SGML or XML if you can get your hands on it, and then parse that
data into a database that you will have thought carefully about in
advance, or have someone design it for you. Most commercial OTS products
do not let you tweak their software to your particular needs, or else
make you pay through the nose to do so, which is all fair and well if
that is what you are happy to live with. This was one of the reasons I
switched from proprietary solutions to open source development
solutions, because even if I have to pay for initial development (not
being much of a programmer unfortunately), at least in the future I can
get into the source and tweak it or extend it if needs be, and our
company is no longer bound to one supplier.
