Just to take this further and answer the specific question, I should
have mentioned that ED can be range-searched and the format is extremely
flexible.

So for a monthly update, you can use any of the following in combination
with your search terms:

=> s 20051001-20051031/ed
L1 71284 20051001-20051031/ED
                 (20051001-20051031/ED)

=> s 1 Oct 2005-31 Oct 2005/ed
L2 71284 1 OCT 2005-31 OCT 2005/ED
                 (20051001-20051031/ED)

=> s 1 October 2005-31 October 2005/ed
L3 71284 1 OCTOBER 2005-31 OCTOBER 2005/ED
                 (20051001-20051031/ED)

=> s October 1, 2005-October 31, 2005/ed
L4 71284 OCTOBER 1, 2005-OCTOBER 31, 2005/ED
                 (20051001-20051031/ED)

=> s Oct 1, 2005-Oct 31, 2005/ed
L5 71284 OCT 1, 2005-OCT 31, 2005/ED
                 (20051001-20051031/ED)

To find just the new entries, you should use the ED (Entry Date) update
code. This is in the form YYYYMMDD and if necessary you can do an
EXPAND to find the actual update dates, e.g:

=> e 20051001/ed
E1 6180 20050923/ED
E2 7558 20050928/ED
E3 0 --> 20051001/ED
E4 13798 20051003/ED
E5 11451 20051006/ED
E6 8216 20051011/ED
E7 10411 20051014/ED
E8 9587 20051019/ED
E9 5869 20051024/ED
E10 11952 20051027/ED
E11 7092 20051101/ED
**** END OF FIELD ****

I don't know about each month, but you can limit the search to new basic
records within an update. Use <Derwent Week>/DW.B to retrieve basic
patents only:
=> s 200570/dw.b
L3 7092 200570/DW.B
=> s us/pc and l3
L4 2239 US/PC AND L3

=> d pn 2239

L4 ANSWER 2239 OF 2239 WPIDS COPYRIGHT 2005 THE THOMSON CORP on STN
PN CA-----2459428 A1 20050903 (200570)* EN 34 H04B-001-38 <--

     US--2005232194 A1 20051020 (200570) H04Q-007-00 <--

Otherwise, 200570/dw has 18,390 records.
