Karen,

I could suggest one way how you could locate reputable local patent
firms in Russia, using Russian Patent database as a source.

There is free-of-charge Russian patent database RUABEN or RUABRU (on
English or Russian, correspondently). They are accessible through
"guest" access ( http://www.fips.ru/ensite/ =
<http://www.fips.ru/ensite/>
). After you logged -in, choose "Abstracts Russian patents 1994-2005
(Engl.)". Click on "Query parameters" [on the upper left corner of the
screen], mark a box in the" Fields for search" for "Alloting country or
organization" [which means "Assignee Country"], then click on "Query
definition" button (just below "Query parameters"). Type "AU" in the
"Alloting country or organization" field. It gives you a list of patent
Australian Applicants with the name of a patent attorney (patent firm),
which prosecuted the case. Call you local company and ask for details
and references. Normally you will find some of major patent firms
("Gorodisskij i Partnery", Sojuzpatent", etc.). If you have
difficulties to recognize name of the Australian company listed in the
record, you could check it by referenced WO publication number or
national application number).

One of advantages of using this source is an opportunity to check a
potential conflict of interests: has the company of question of you =
name
search been a client of your prospected local patent firm.

Full contact information for a patent agents/attorneys could be found =
in
the database of Registered Russian Patent Attorneys (in Russian, and
searchable in Russian, http://www.fips.ru/ppov/patpov.htm
<http://www.fips.ru/ppov/patpov.htm> ) (An English page is under
construction http://www.fips.ru/ppoven/ <http://www.fips.ru/ppoven/> ).
[Take a attorney's name in Cyrillic from the RUABRU database, or front
page of the Russian patent, truncate 2-3 last letters and search with a
wild card *: Contact information normally e-mail address which is not =
in
Cyrillic).

Valuing an importance of local firm, I think that a substantial part
"local" sources which very likely could be consulted first. by local
agents could be searched outside Russia.

I assume that you have already searched major commercial databases with
comprehensive coverage of Russian and former Soviet Union's utility
patents [Chemical Abstracts (chemical and related art), Derwent,
INPADOC, Q-O PlusPat). [In addition, you could consult INPADOC database
for national phase non-entry/entry information available from 2000 and
2002 respectively (
http://www.european-patent-office.org/inpadoc/news/prs.htm
<http://www.european-patent-office.org/inpadoc/news/prs.htm> ) for a
case when foreign applicant could use PCT filing to apply for Russian
patent]

Below is discussion of these "local" sources, available online.

Patent Databases RUABRU or RUABEN, Russian and English language
databases of Russian Patent Documents from 1994, both have English
language interface and available free of charge (discussed above). The
former database, RUABRU, has information on published Russian
Applications, which is not available in any major commercial databases
on Russian patents (See http://www.fips.ru/ensite/dbs/m2_5.html
<http://www.fips.ru/ensite/dbs/m2_5.html> ,
http://www.fips.ru/ensite/dbs/m2_6.html

Industrial models (design patents) database RUDESIGN, is Russian
language database on industrial models registered in Russia from 1993,
available online, but require subscription. (
http://www.fips.ru/ensite/dbs/design.htm

It could be a challenge to search a name of non-Russian company, even
when using English language database. The original name is
transliterated in Russian and then back in English. As result, an
"English" spelling could differ from original. For example Bayer AG are
searchable as Bajer AG (see p. 3 of RU2208316,
http://v3.espacenet.com/origdoc?DB=EPODOC
<http://v3.espacenet.com/origdoc?DB=EPODOC&IDX=RU2208316&F=0&QPN==
RU22083
16> &IDX=RU2208316&F=0&QPN=RU2208316). When the "correct" English =
name
used in RUABEN database is identified [for example, from known patents]
it could be used consistently.

For Russian Language databases RUABRU or RUDESIGN, a name search should
be done in Cyrillic.

[When utility or industrial design patent is identified, online
[free-of-charge] Registers could be consulted to check if the patent =
are
in force. ( http://www.fips.ru/cdfi/index_en.htm
<http://www.fips.ru/cdfi/index_en.htm> )

Best Regards,

Can anyone a recommend a firm to do local name searching in Brazil and

Any suggestions would be welcomed.

Thanks in advance.
