Well, I can't point you to any independent rating lists, because I don't
know of any. Some IP magazines publish yearly listings, IP World or
Managing Intellectual Property spring to mind, but I don't know how
independent they are or what criteria they choose to compile their
listing. The simple fact of the matter is that most IP law firms
actually pay to be entered into directories or listings. Some of these
entries are made upon invitation, i.e. you get invited to be listed
provided you pay, other editors are less hypocritical in a way in that
they simply ask you if you want to be listed and then state how much
that is going to cost you.

Like I said, there may be some independently compiled material out
there, but I have my doubts about how independent that may be ;-)

Another thing : you are unlikely to find many small firms in the listing
despite some of them being very good at what they do. This is because
many compilers naturally tend to favour overall capacity or size as a
heavily weighed factor in being able to service clients, so a firm with
500 attorneys is likely (but not systematically) likely to be ranked
above one that has only 200 clients. In Europe, since I can't speak for
the situation in the US, there are a great many small IP firms that
still exist and work together on a pan-European scale, but there is a
tendency, much like in the US, to mergers and acquisitions to create
"ober-firms".
