Greetings of the Season PIUG Members!

I'm writing to announce two exciting new MicroPatent releases
of which I'd like to make you aware.

The first is the release of a new patent database, MicroPatent's
Patent Index Database (MPI). We're extremely pleased to announce
the release of MPI, as we feel its comprehensive coverage and
timeliness will significantly improve and simplify your bibliographic
research, while also giving you searchable access to legal status
information.

The core of MPI comes from the European Patent Office's DOC.db
and INPADOC collections. DOC.db is one of the tools used by EPO
examiners which provides the backbone for the Espacenet service.
To this core, we add data from MicroPatent's other collections,
supplementing the records with abstracts, front-page drawings,
forward and backward citation information, and other details. To make
up for the time lag in INPADOC/ DOC.db coverage for some authorities
(notably US and PCT), we use our direct data sources, incorporating
bibliographic data for these countries within a couple of days of
publication.
All of this makes MPI the most timely bibliographic database available.

Additionally, MPI is configured in a user-friendly manner, so you can
search bibliographic fields, and display your results as patent
families,
or you can monitor legal status changes for a known set of patents.
Plus, it's economical. We've priced MPI so it's a less expensive, and
more timely, alternative to patent abstracting and indexing databases.

MPI highlights include:
** It's based on DOC.db, the EPO examiners' database, and their
    INPADOC file.
** Forward and backward citations can be displayed and searched for
the EP, US, & WO, and will soon be added for DE and GB records.
** MPI covers 71 countries/patent authorities.
** Searchable legal status information is available for 42 countries.
** Records date back to 1920 in general, but some are even earlier.
** Foreign characters have been mapped to English to permit searching
from American as well as European keyboards.
** Front-page updates are pulled from other MicroPatent data sources to

fill in gaps where abstracts are missing from INPADOC and DOC.db.
** Drawings are included for US, EP, PCT, and JP records.
** US Class updates are done six times annually.
** ECLA classes are searchable (they're applied and updated
systematically
    by EPO examiners).
** You can link to claims, the full-text of available documents, and
PDF files
    of records from MPI.

Read below for information on free online training and information
sessions
on MPI.

The second significant release we're announcing is MicroPatent's new
IP management and collaboration tool set, Aureka 8.0, to help you better

manage the analysis and knowledge gleaned from your intellectual assets.

For those of you familiar with Aurigin, Aureka 8.0 replaces the Aureka
Online Services 2.5 client/server system and the Aureka Foundation
Server
model, providing the following new functionality:
** Add and search non-patent documents including invention disclosures,

filed applications, prior art references, conference papers, journal
articles,
white papers, electronic laboratory notebook text, search results
from other
Hosts, technical reports, and standards/stagegate reviews.
** Organize and manage work in editable folders, subfolders, and lists.

** Collaborate via shared folders and notes, so you and your colleagues
can view
each others' work, add annotations, and highlight relevant
documents.
** Export abstracts, in addition to the other export fields, into Excel
for further
manipulation, and run new reports by publishing organization,
backward
    citations, and more.
** Analyze results by text, bibliographic data, and citations with
powerful tools
including ThemeScape maps, Citation Trees, clustering, and reports.
