Re: CALL FOR QUESTIONS!! PIUG 2003 Annual Conference

Keith,

I try to develop for IE5 and later and Netscape 6 or later. Lately, I
learned how to substitute JavaScript buttons and make them work in both.
But then I was surprised by clients using Netscape 4.77 and earlier
which doesn't support them (even though Netscape invented JavaScript).

There isn't time to worry about Opera, etc beyond trying to stick to the
standards as closely as possible.

Hi Alan.

Practically speaking, if you cover IE from version 5 up you can expect
to
satisfy about 85% of users. Another 10% if you include Netscape, but
I've
found version distribution is much more uniform than IE ( most of which
is 6 )
MS is pretty good regarding upward compatibility; if you test on 5 and
it works it will probably work on 5.5 and 6.

As for the 5% using Opera, Lynx, etc... keep fighting the good fight.

Let me send an early one:

To what extent can vendors expect clients to keep their Internet browser
software current? Which Browsers and versions do we need to develop for
and which can we assign to the dustbin of history?

1) "Ask PIUG: a panel discussion featuring select questions from
commercial information providers", hosted by John Willmore - Tuesday,
May 6, 4-5pm - Most of the PIUG Full Member panel participants will
likely be selected based on the proposed questions to the panel. The
panel participants will answer questions related to patent information
or patent analysis customer needs, viewpoints, etc. Only people
working for commercial information providers (i.e. vendor employees or
PIUG Associate Members) should submit questions for panel 1.
