esp@cenet <mailto:esp@cenet> (r): the view from within

An evening meeting - 6 November 2002

Speaker: Graham Day, <mailto:esp@cenet> esp@cenet Project Leader,
European Patent Office
Chair: Stephen Adams, Managing Director, Magister Ltd.

The launch of <mailto:esp@cenet> esp@cenet in 1997 revolutionised
patent information in Europe and further afield by providing desktop
access to a vast international database. The presentation will briefly
recap the objectives set for the service and how far these have been met
in the intervening years. It will review the current status of the
service, focussing on the functionality offered and also the data that
is available within the various component databases. This will be
followed by a preview of the proposed new user interface, a look at some
of the new features that will be offered including in particular the
availability of family and legal status information, and the talk will
conclude with a longer term outlook on the way that the EPO sees
<mailto:esp@cenet> esp@cenet developing in the years to come.

Graham Day spent six years studying chemistry at under- and
post-graduate level at Imperial College. He joined the European Patent
Office in November 1989 as a search examiner working in the area of
carbohydrates (C07H). He wrote the initial proposals for what we all now
know as esp@cenet <mailto:esp@cenet> in summer 1997 and built the first
version from two Microsoft Access databases installed on the EPO's
intranet in September of the same year. Since that time he has continued
to work exclusively for the esp@cenet <mailto:esp@cenet> team, being
appointed as project leader in November 1999, a position he still holds
today.

The presentation will be followed by a question and answer session on
esp@cenet <mailto:esp@cenet> . It would be appreciated if questions and
topics for discussion at this session could be sent in advance by email
to david.newton@bl.uk <mailto:david.newton@bl.uk> or by fax to 020
7412 7480 . There will also be a short report on the EPO's EPIDOS
meeting being held in Copenhagen 15 -17 October.

The meeting will be held at the Chartered Institute of Library and
Information Professionals (CILIP), 7 Ridgmount Street, London WC1E 7AE
(nearest underground station is Goodge Street). Click here for a map

The meeting will start at 18.00 with refreshments available before the
meeting from 17.30. The meeting will conclude at 19.45. For anyone who
wishes to participate, a visit to a restaurant is planned for after the
meeting and details will be sent to those who register. The meeting is
only open to members of the PATMG but applications for membership are
welcomed.
Due to limited capacity registration is required in advance by emailing
david.newton@bl.uk <mailto:david.newton@bl.uk> or by fax to 020 7412
7480.
