Nobody has answered the general part of your question, which is how patent
numbers are formatted in Japan. Until 2000, Japanese patents and applications
were formatted as the year of the Emperor's reign followed by a hyphen and a
6-digit number. The same format was used for application serial numbers,
published applications, examined applications (ready for grant after an
opposition period and/or opposition procedings, and utility models. Every year,
each series started with YY-000001, so there are lots of documents with the same
serial numbers. There is no continuity between the serial number of the
application to the serial number of the published documents it generates. To
distinguish the type of number, you have to look at the kind of document code,
the INID code on the face of the document, or the field label in a database.
There were also granted patent numbers, which are in a different format and
aren't covered by most databases.
To figure out how to format a patent number for retrieval, you have to check the
documentation of the database you're using. Many databases cover published
applications, but fewer cover examined applications and hardly any cover utility
models. PATOLIS seems to be the only database that has everything.

Dear list members,
I am trying to find out if I can get the English abstracts (or maybe English
language counterparts) of a number of Japanese unexamined patent applications
and examined utility models. I tried the Japanese Patent Office's search
database, plus the search engine in esp@cenet. It doesn't look like I can get
the application number right for the search. The numbers I have for the
unexamined patent applications are in the form like 55-031915, or 5-322755. For
the utility models I have the numbers in the form like 48-42955.
If you can help me figure out how to reformat the publication numbers for the
search, I will be very grateful, since I have tried everything I could think of
and I am stuck.
