It would seem to be an error which you have found, so my colleagues in
Karlsruhe will be look into it and I'll let you know the outcome. Elyse
rightly advises you that you should report errors like this to the STN
Helpdesk. STN are in regular contact with INPADOC staff in Vienna, and
our colleagues there will make any necessary corrections.

PAS is the standardised patent assignee field provided by INPADOC.
Punctuation marks are removed and standardised name formats are provided
to assist in comprehensive assignee searching. It is worth noting that
the PAS field will sometimes be populated when the PA field is not,
especially in cases of transliteration. PAS is, however, not always an
accurate reflection of PA, as I am sure others who answer your question
will tell you. So FIZ Karlsruhe recommend that you search in both PA
and PAS to ensure complete retrieval for your assignee of interest, and
always carefully review the answers you have retrieved.

LEVELs are display feature of the STN version of INPADOC. INPADOC
records on STN are designed around a "national family", i.e.
publications from a single authority which share a common
application/filing number, and the biblio for each member is represented
by a publication LEVEL. This simple count is provided as a visual clue
as to which stage of a national patent prosecution you are looking at,
and how many publication stages there have been for that national
family. D MAX will get you all the stages available for a given
national family, including the full legal status.

MEMBERs are also a display feature of the STN version of INPADOC. Each
national family record represents a MEMBER of the international patent
family, as seen using the D FFAM display format. With FFAM, the
international family is organised by its national family MEMBERs, and
each MEMBER comes complete with its publication LEVELs. There is also a
summary family format D FAM, with all the numberical relationships
provided in a concise table. This can be usefully included with your
FFAM display, i.e. D FAM FFAM, at no extra cost.

I should note that the international patent family for INPADOC on STN is
compiled by an algorithm written by us at FIZ Karlsruhe. Each
host/vendor has its own way of compiling INPADOC families from the
original data, so you might occassionally see differences between us for
the same patent families.

I hope that gives you some insight into the STN implementation of
INPADOC, if you have any further questions then just ask.

Regards

Rob

Clay,

I can't speak for STN, but I called the Dialog help desk recently for
information about searching INPADOC on Dialog. They told me that if I
find an error I should report it to them. They will check it out to
determine if it really is an error, find the source of the error and try
to correct it. They even send corrections to INPADOC. They told me that
INPADOC does make these corrections. I cannot speak for what they
actually do since I have no real examples, but if I were you, I would
contact the STN helpdesk.

Thanks!

Elyse

Subject: Legal Status information INPADOC/IFICLS

To all,

I retrieved the following text from an INPADOC search
on STN. I believe the entry "PAS UNIV PENNSYLVANIA"
is an error, but how do I confirm it? I conducted the
search specifically for Assignee information.

Does anyone know what the difference is between PAS
and PA besides PAS means "Patent Assignee INPADOC
Standard"?

Another question regarding INPADOC on STN - is did I
obtain the best biblio information for legal status
i.e. assignment history by using the display command
"d ffam"?

Could someone also comment on what MEMBER and LEVEL
represent in the biblio?

In addition to this question I also attempted to
obtain legal status information for the same patent
(US 5,206,352) on IFICLS using STN. There was no
record of the patent. I spoke with a very helpful
searcher at STN about my search and she confirmed that
the patent did not exist in the database. Could
someone from IFI comment on the record of this patent
in the IFICLS database.

Thanks to the board,

Clay
