I have not been able to access the Canadian Patent site [
<http://patents1.ic.gc.ca/> http://patents1.ic.gc.ca/] for a couple of
months. My telephone inquiry to CIPO yielded the suggestion that my
firm's firewall is the culprit. But my network administrator can't find
any anomaly and is baffled.

If anyone has had this problem, and solved it, I would appreciate any
advice.

Our ability to get into the Canadian patent office and trade-marks sites
has been very spotty in recent weeks. Sometimes we can get in, and
other times we cannot. I have not noticed any pattern to it.

One of the smart things to do when you can't reach a web site (which I
have failed to do in this case) is to do a "traceroute". It will
sometimes turn out that the reason why you can't get to the web site is
a routing problem in the network. Such a routing problem may block some
would-be visitors while letting others in, depending on where they are
coming from.

On a windows machine, click start and run and "command". This opens a
DOS window. Then type

tracert <http://patents1.ic.gc.ca/> http://patents1.ic.gc.ca/

and watch to see if it reaches the last hop.

You can share the results of the traceroute with others and you can use
it to explain to your ISP what the problem is.
