Early in 2002 I posted an announcement that the the 3rd edition of the American
Chemical Society Committee on Patents and Related Matter's patent primer, "What
Every Chemist Should Know about Patents", had been posted to the website of the
ACS Office of Legislative and Government Affairs (OLGA).
Subsequently, there was some discussion with list members of problems they were
having in accessing the document. Closer examination of the posting revealed
that there were missing pages as well, and we've been trying to get everything
fixed.
The replacement version seems to have all its pages, but they're not in a single
document. At the moment, you can find it linked from the OLGA homepage at
www.chemistry.org. It may move in the future, so I don't recommend bookmarking
that site. The main part of the document is at
http://www.chemistry.org/portal/resources?id=1b41692a6cf811d6f8dd6ed9fe800100.
Appendix I, a sample US patent, is at
http://www.acs.org/portal/resources?id=4d315f8a6cf811d6f8dd6ed9fe800100.
Appendix II, a sample US published patent application is at
http://www.acs.org/portal/resources?id=7ec9017e6cf811d6f8dd6ed9fe800100.
If you bookmarked the original URL, please replace your bookmark with those
above. If you find problems with the current version, please let me know.
This booklet covers the basics of patent law, with a US slant. Although it was
written by chemists, for chemists, it is really for anyone working in
industry or academia. It is provided as a PDF file, and downloading for
non-commercial use is encouraged. A printed version of the booklet will be
available at a later date.
