Experience w/ competitive intelligence reports?

Have you developed competitive intelligence reports on patent activity
for your employers or clients? If so, I would appreciate your advice.

I am developing a formal report writing assignment that would require
students to use patent records (among other resources) to trace the
recent patenting activity of companies in the technical/scientific
areas they are studying. The course is a semester-long advanced writing
course focused specifically on writing technical reports & proposals.
Students are both graduate and upper division undergraduate students,
and typically represent a variety of disciplines (Systems Analysis/MIS,
Paper Science, Environmental Science, etc.)

My goal is to develop a case--a scenario that sets the stage for the
students' research and the resulting report--that reflects a realistic
use of patent records and is flexible enough to accommodate research in
the different scientific/technical areas. The librarians at my local
PTDL will help me introduce patents and patent searching to my
students, and I hope to be able to develop requirements that make the
assignment manageable, given that much about patents will be new to the
students.

I would appreciate hearing about your experiences to help me develop
this scenario. If you would be willing to answer some questions and
share your experiences, would you please contact me?
