Old US patents

Dear colleagues,
I remember that the question have been put some times on the list, but I
could n't trace a suitable solution for the case, therefore I'm asking you a
new help on this matter:
I' am required to carry out applicant/inventor searches amongst US patents
of the years 1850-1900.
I understand that I could search the USPTO site only by number or by
classification, while Patsearch of Micropatent could offer me the chance to
do a full text search or at least a boolean search within the usual patent
fields (applicant, inventor, title, etc.).
A classification search could be useful too, but which classification should
I use? In other words, these old patents bring a code of an old
classification system, an old code of the current classification system or
they have been reclassified and have a new code of the current system?
In the first case, where can I find a index/manual for the classification
system used in those years (if any) or, in the second case, an old release
of the current one?
Thanks in advance for any help
Best regards
Guido Moradei
