There are a few examples in both WPI and INPADOC of cases where an unexamined Japanese patent application (JP-A) has
claimed priority from a Japanese utility model first filing. These are the only instances where you will get utility model
data in these files.
Examined utility models under the old law (JP-Y) are available for searching by number only in the Utility Model gazette
database via the JPO website, for publications since 1922.

The coverage of JP-U documents for Patolis-e is from 1960. The coverage from the JPO website is longer, but the file is
only searchable by a restricted number of fields - as Alan said, essentially IPC and FI/F-terms. The year coverage is
claimed to be from 1885, although whether this is true for both patents and utility models is not made clear. Certainly a
while ago is was claimed to be from at least 1912 for utility models. The results are in facsimile Japanese.
