Andy, I just received a DWPI March monthly update within the past few days from Questel-Orbit.
As I was editing the SDI, I noted that not one out of 46 patent family records contained a publication date from 2002! Not ONE! This is a search mostly in electrotherapeutic medical devices, A61N001/ , a group of named assignees, etc. I exclude new US patents since those are invariably slower in Derwent than in my other SDI sources for US coverage. But to see EP & WO documents from July - December 2001 showing up in a March 2002 SDI update is far from comparable to the Derwent website claims for timeliness. This is not a new trend, either, I might add. Admittedly Derwent's core customers are pharma, chem, and energy, so I'd be curious to hear from PIUG readers in those industries about declining timeliness of US, EP & WO updates in DWPI. Perhaps it's fortunate Derwent has not
adopted "current awareness" as their general name for SDIs. Perhaps it's time to redefine SDI - - Slow Delivery of Information, or better still, SLIP, Still Languishing Intellectual Property?!

Subject: Is the Timeliness of Derwent Basics slipping way behind?
For sometime now I have been feeling that Derwent have been falling way
behind in their updates. I finally got round to doing some spot checks on
DW 0221 published just a few days ago.
On their website (

dates covered by this particular week. Hopefully you can read them below if
the formatting allows you....
However on inspecting the first few basics for 0221, the patent publication
date (third column in the Patent Family) is along way adrift - in some
cases it is as far back as August 2001 for US grants, October 2001 for US
Applications, November 2001 for EP A - as you can see below! (I won't
mention the Chinese one from April 1998...)
Sure enough the latest US 6357047 (published on March 12th) is there as
advertised - so perhaps it is only some of Derwent's technology
specialists/abstracters that are falling behind, and it just so happens
that they are the ones I am interested in!
I am wrong or just unlucky? (if not then I don't think 6 months to wait
before Derwent picks up a US grant is at all good) - has Derwent recently
become MANY months behind entering a new basic record even for US EP and WO
in a lot of cases? What are your experiences?
If this is a true issue, can PIUG consider raising this collectively with
Derwent? - my experience is a single voice does not always get attention -
and now the Derwent User Meetings seem to be no more.... This could become
a "PIUG as Vox Populi" issue?
