Not to carry Micropatent's water, but the fulltext US patents database only on Micropatent is relatively cheap, with a annual "special" price of $495/year. Though that's not free, it's dramatically less than most other commercial search services charge for access to their fulltext US patents databases, particularly since you don't pay extra for the online displays, only for full-image downloads. Esp@cenet is FREE, but is SLOW & extremely time consuming.

Dear PIUG Users,
Thank you for your advice and help. I managed to identify a document which
I was looking for. Unfortunately I can't use services like MicroPatent or
Questel-Orbit because as a library we can't afford to do that. I was sure
that Esp@cenet similarly to USPTO database, gives possibility to search
only by number or classification (as far as older parts of collections are
regarded). It would be very helpful to know more about what Roy
Zimmermann wrote - degree of completeness of the bibliographic data
available pre-1976 patents on Esp@cenet.
Best wishes,
Agnieszka Gorak-Marecik
