Neil,
The USPTO does provide information about patent expiries, by listing newly
expired patents in the Official Gazette and in detail through the USPTO PAIR
site, http://pair.uspto.gov/cgi-bin/final/home.pl.
The listings of expired patents can be found in weekly lists in the electronic
OG at http://www.uspto.gov/web/offices/com/sol/og/, and through the MicroPatent
site. Patent status databases have expiration data for specific patents. In
the IFI CLAIMS files, "expired" is a searchable term in records that expired
before the last annual reload of the database.
PAIR is a really informative site. It's the USPTO's live record of the status
of issued patents and applications (there's a private PAIR site for pending,
unpublished publications, too). You search by publication or application
number. If the patent's expired, there's a statement to that effect in the
STATUS field. If not, there's information about when fees are due, when they
were paid, and for each payment window (4,8, and 12 years), details of payments
made. The records even include the correspondence address of the patentee.

Dear PIUG list colleagues,
I have received the attached message from the provider of a weekly
commercial newsletter dealing with patent expiries, and post it to the
list for information and comment. My original document is now out of
date and I would be interested to receive details of other sources of
patent expiry information, so that eventually the document can be
updated.

I saw a note you posted to Derwent.
The link you provided
<http://www.uspto.gov/web/offices/pac/expired/index.html>
http://www.uspto.gov/web/offices/pac/expired/index.html is no longer
useful, the USPTO has closed public release of information on expired
patents. They only provide phone numbers and email address for
inquiries.
You might try www.expatent.com <http://www.expatent.com> which is a
webpage link to a fee based newsletter. I am the author of that
newsletter and although this newsletter only provides a weekly list of
expired patents, I can look up information on individual patent numbers
from my database.
