Dear PIUG Colleagues,
Those of you involved with the pharma/biotech sector may be interested to
learn of the publication of our annual reference book, Drug Patents 2001.
This gives an overview of innovation in the industry based on 42,000
qualifying therapeutic patents published from 1995 thru 2000, together with
a broader preview of 2001 trends based on 6,500 documents published during
the early part of the year.
The Leage Table for 1995-2000 puts GSK, Merck and Aventis in the top three
positions, though the 2001 snapshot shows that their portfolios now differ
noticeably in emphasis. Also in 2001, Pfizer takes third position, and two
non-industrials (the NIH and the University of California) feature in the
top ten.
The overall drug discovery interests of the industry are explored using a
correspondence analysis based on disease targets (indications) and
pharmacological mechanisms (actions), and expressed as a series of factorial
maps. There follow detailed profiles for the top 90 innovators, illustrated
with graphs, including a collaboration map to show instances of joint patent
applications.
The DP2001 title replaces our former bimonthly analysis journal, Current
Trends in Pharmaceutical Discovery (CTPD), in which patents on specific
therapeutic topics were analysed in detail. Back copies of some CTPD issues
are still available.
DP2001 is available in printed form and (to purchasers of multiple copies)
on CD-ROM, with source data and statistics tables for in-house processing;
it is also a Portal option for subscribers to the Current Drugs database
IDdb3. A sample booklet is available on our website,
www.current-patents.com; anyone needing further infomation as to content or
availability is invited to contact me directly.
