Re: Market Data - which data file to use?

Dear Dr. Shulkla,

There are many sources for market share data and many different ways that
market share is expressed. I frequently find that questions about market
share (or share of the market) have answers that are expressed in different
ways. For example, an article or market research report may indicate that a
market, category, segment, product, company, or industry is of a certain
size, with the information expressed in terms of dollar amount, number of
users, patients, those with a particular disease (prevalence), etc.

Frequently, market share is attributed to companies when comparing who has
the most market share and sometimes products or brand names as in "brand
share". Researching for so called market share or market size may take some
broader or creative searching since the topic in question may require using
terminology other than "market share"

That being said, the size of a market (another common way that questions are
asked but not necessarily described in the literature), can be found in a
wide range of sources such as investment analyst's reports, pharmaceutical
industry articles and more general business sources that cover many
industries, e.g., Gale Group databases (such as Promt and Trade and
Industry) or Business and Industry database, or market research
reports/databases. These types of sources are found in databases from
aggregators/vendors such as Dialog, DataStar, Lexis-Nexis, Factiva, and
Profound to name a few.

Since I'm not familiar with STN and I know that many patent searchers use
it, maybe that there are some business / pharmaceutical industry files there
that could be helpful too. If you have access to any of the others, let me
know and I can tell you specific files/databases to use. Lexis-Nexis has a
database called the Market Share Reporter but my guess is that business and
pharmaceutical business and news literature or market research reports may
be an equally good or better starting place. One never knows for sure.

Apart from that, you could start by sung the free Web to see what type of
luck you have since many of the database producers or publishers are now on
the Web and often provide summaries or tables of contents for their
reports - and of course, there are many other sources of information on the
Web too. A search of Google, for example, using the terms antiviral market
brings up some hits including a Frost and Sullivan Market Research report
description as the first hit entitled "Antiviral Drugs Market Poised for
Exponential Growth Fuelled by Introduction of New HIV/AIDS Treatment
Products." The actual report title, however, refers to the "European
Antiviral Drug Market" and the Web site is a summary of the description of a
"for sale" report that was published in 1997. Yet, there may be some
valuable information in this summary or a more in-depth review may be
required to see if it answers your question. More current information could
be sought after and probably found in some of the sources I've been
describing above. BTW, there are other hits under this search formulation
that can be reviewed and there are other ways to formulate a search for your
question as well. "For sale" reports can be identified through the
following sites:

http://www.MindBranch.Com
http://www.MarketResearch.com
http://www.IMRMall.com

All have descriptions of the reports and tables of contents and two allow
purchase of information by the page rather than the entire report. Some Web
site aggregators are:

www.nlresearch.com (click on Market Research or Investext) where you can
search free but must pay for purchase of items. One note of caution, the
Investment analyst's reports on Northern Light are not the complete file as
those available from Research Bank Web, see below, and other products that
Thomson offers.

www.profound.com - From Dialog (by subscription only)

www.investext.com (From Research Bank Web, Thomson) - must have an account
for searching, which is low cost to establish but then you pay as you go
with kwic (key word in context) capabilities.

Intelliscope (From www.intelligencedata.com, Thomson), subscription based.

Here are a few of my bookmarks on the medical, pharma, and biotech
industries, though I haven't checked to see if they would be helpful for
your specific question.
