I don't know if this is already well-known but (just in case):
Did you know that you can get an automatic translation of the Japanese
patent applications for free ?
That's a new service from the Japanese patent office.
Check the following site:
http://www2.ipdl.jpo-miti.go.jp/dbpweb/connecter/guest/DBPinit/ENGDB/wrefpaj
Search for a patent application and click on DETAILS on top of the retrieved
page, you will get an automatic translation of the claims. If you click on
the appropriate other section buttons, you will get these parts also
translated.

Automated translation function
___Hitherto merely the front page of the publication of patent applications
in English has been serviced through CD-ROM. At present, full text of the
publication in Japanese has additionally become possible in English due to
loading of an automated translation function. Full text data is
automatically translated from Japanese to English when clicking ‘Detail’
in
the margin of retrieved page.
