Hello
well, it took some time until this message -sorry:
My question were:
how many pages has the biggest publication (if you don't count books),
how many pages has the biggest patent,
which patent has the most authors, and
which publication has the most authors ???
Several people kindly answered, some of the answers you saw already.
Nevertheless, for later easier retrieval, I put all answers together.
To all who answered, via or off the list: thank you.
I should have asked another question, as somebody remarked:
You should also ask who has written the longest claim. I believe
Greg Aharonian found one that ran over six pages long (all one sentence,
of course).

==>How many pages has the biggest publication (if you don't count books) ?
I would nominate the transcripts of the Watergate tapes <g> But seriously,
a lot of government reports can run to a huge length.
I should have included books too. There is no real difference between large
publications and books.
==>How many pages has the biggest patent ?
Due some time in August 2000 is an EP-A publication in the biotech area
which is supposed to contain about 400,000 pages. There was a famous case
back in the 70's of an IBM patent which came out in 3 volumes in the UK as
GB 1108800, but I don't know the page count.
The patent GB 1108800 counts 27861 pages.
European Patent Application containing over 50000 pages. This was filed
using the UK Patent Office as the Receiving Office.
It is apparently the largest patent application filed at the UK Patent
Office.
It claims priority from over 250 applications.
Apparently, a US application has been filed containing over 400,000 pages.
On the Japanese kokai front:
Since 1993,
Longest Kokai at 2565 pages , 1997-274731, Oct. 21, 1997,
to Discovision Associates for a data storage device and
method.
==>Which patent has the most authors ?
I would start looking in the Soviet patent literature - many of them seemed
to list the entire research team.
Most number of inventors at 38 is shared by three Kokai:
1999-258605, Sept 24, 1999
1999-258606, Sept 24, 1999
1999-242225, Sept 7, 1999
all to Fujitsu for liquid crystal displays.
Which publication has the most authors ?
The two which I am aware of are:
a. Abe, K. et al. (a total of 406 authors)
Phys. Rev. Lett. 70(17), 2515-2520 (1993).
b. Abe, F. et al. (a total of 271 authors)
Phys. Rev. D: Part. Fields 45(11, Pt.1), 3921-3948
3921-3948.
Both report on properties of matter and elementary
particles.
The 1992 paper attracted the attention of the
"Science" journal which inserted a comment in an
article
"Big Physics Provokes a Backlash"
Science 257(5076), 1468-1470 (11 September 1992).
These were the top records back in 1996. Perhaps
they are broken by now.
