Recently, Chemical Abstracts added cited patent and literature
references into CAPlus/CA. We wellcome this new feature which should
enhance the added value of these databases significantly. However, we
observed several inconsistencies within the new RE field:
In many cases, a cited patent is documented with its patent assignee and
its number:
Ciba-Geigy Ag; EP 777645 A1
Imperial Chemical Industries Plc; EP 0351194 A2 1990 HCAPLUS
However, very often the patent assignee is not given:
Anon; EP 0012117 1979 HCAPLUS
Most often, cited US patents are referenced with their inventor:
Philippossian; US 4469698 1984
However, sometimes the assignee is given:
Ciba-Geigy Ag; US 5583249 A
We understand that these differences result from different citation
formats within the orignal documents. E. g. the USPTO cites US patents
with its inventor and foreign references without any additional
information. However, an unique format of all citations within the
CAPlus/CA files would be wellcomed. We would prefer a format which
contains in each case the patent assignee and the patent number.
Irritating are references which do only contain an author or inventor:
Pepin; 1991 HCAPLUS
This is not very helpful and should be suppressed.
Sincerely,
Joerg Ohms
