Could anyone kindly explain the following:

I have a WO that published in 1998 and an EP that published (not granted) in 2000. I would like to obtain the EP patent but it refers me to the WO patent. I'm assuming therefore that the application for both WO and EP are identical regardless of when the filings occured. Is this correct?
