As part of our policy of continual enhancements to Derwent World Patents
Index (DWPI), we are pleased to announce the improved timeliness of our
Equivalent patents. As from DWPI Update 200032, Derwent will begin
publishing Equivalent patents online and in printed products much sooner
than has previously been the case.
Until now, Equivalent patents have been released at the same time as Basic
patents with the same Patent Office publication date in a single Derwent
Update. Due to the value-add work involved in abstracting and indexing each
Basic patent, the delivery of Equivalent patents (which are added to an
existing patent family after a non-conventional equivalency search has been
conducted) had been delayed.
The impact of the new fast track processing is illustrated by the fact that
US Equivalents will be released 4 updates earlier (e.g. in update 200041,
rather than 200045). In real terms, this equates to approximately 18 days
from publication by the US Patent Office to availability in the DWPI
database online - a timeliness improvement of over one calendar month for US
Equivalents.
In order to achieve this target, you will see higher volumes of Equivalent
patent numbers appearing in DWPI and relevant printed products during
updates 200032 through 200041. Over this period an additional 30,000
Equivalent patents will be published by Derwent, scheduled to avoid any
excessively large updates. From update 200042 onwards the volumes of
Equivalent patent numbers will have returned to normal and the improved
timeliness will be fully realised.
Derwent will be continuing to improve and streamline its processes going
forwards, resulting in further timeliness benefits to DWPI.
