I used to search the USPTO site below for patents expired due to nonpayment
of fees, but this facility was withdrawn some time ago.

Does anyone know of an alternative source for this information apart from
telephoning the numbers given on the referral page from the above link?
This was a useful source of status information for US patents, since Inpadoc
includes this data when it can, but I am not convinced that the coverage is
comprehensive.
Looking at this more widely I would be interested to hear of experiences in
finding legal status information including expiry or lapsing details from
Patent Authorities other than EPO, whose Register is very useful, and I have
already referred to Inpadoc as a valuable resource.
I believe that Stephen Adams recently commented on some of the more
difficult countries e.g. KR, CN so perhaps we could broaden the discussion
to include the more accessible ones too?
