Dear all
I have a copy of Liebesny at home (no longer in the office) which does
indeed confirm his work in the early 70's on this field. In addition to
the 'open' literature, he wrote a report for OSTI, the UK Government's
(then) Office of Scientific and Technical Information, which if memory
serves right became subsumed under the BL's research division later on.
I can supply the ref. if you're really interested, but don't hold your
breath trying to obtain a copy.
Also, Charles Oppenheim has written a bit on this after Liebesny,
particularly on the current awareness role of patents vs. journals. His
chapter in Bob Bottle's "Use of chemical information" standard text is
still of interest from this point of view. He has also done some work
which appeared in the Journal of Information Science with some of his
City students.
