Feedback requested - STN Express Improvements

Note to PIUG-L members – I am including 2 file attachments in this email.
Our normal policy is that no attachments should be included in messages
posted to the mailing list, but this rule is based on eliminating the
possible spread of virus, Trojan or worm programs. The attachments that I
am including with this message are simple image files, so they do not
support the transmission of any type of malicious code.

I have recently made 2 suggestions for improvements for STN Express for
Windows. If other patent searchers feel that these improvements are
necessary, I think these suggestions may have a better chance of getting
implemented rather than just on the say so of only 1 person. If anyone else
sees any merit it these suggestions, I would appreciate it if you would send
this feedback to CAS or express it on this list, as there are some people
from CAS on this list.

Suggestion # 1

I have made a suggestion for a feature to be incorporated into STN Express
for Windows, since this problem still is quite a nuisance. The problem in
particular is where Express does not remember the settings of any of the
dialog windows when saving files, opening files, etc. The memory I am
speaking of is the Windows Dialog box memory of the view details of the hard
drive contents within the dialog box - the dialog box button choices for the
“open file” dialog box are: Up One Level; Create New Folder; List; Details

The default view for the dialog box is “list” as shown in the attached JPG
file, defview.jpg. Most often, when I want to open a file, I wish to open
the most recent file, so the view needed is the “details” view (by clicking
on the details button in the dialog box), then the “modified” tab needs to
be clicked to sort by date. This then brings the most recently modified
file to the top of the list of files in the dialog box view. This view can
be seen in the attached file moddate.jpg.

This adds up to a lot of extra unnecessary clicks, time and energy over a
period of time. If Express could be changed so that it remembers the last
View options chosen, this would eliminate all of the excess mouse clicks and
wasted time.

Suggestion # 2
I have another suggested improvement for STN Express. Can you allow the BCE
strategy generator be changed to produce an export of the results that would
otherwise be produced by selecting "print WPI strategy" to a file, as well
as the normal print to paper option? This would make it a lot easier to edit
BCE strategies - a task that always takes a lot of a patent searcher's time,
as the raw codes can just not be used as is for any Markush structures that
are even relatively complex.

When you choose "print WPI strategy" from the main Express toolbar, the file
is printed to the printer on paper. An option for the printout to paper is
to print out the BCE code definitions. The idea that I want is for there to
be an option to send the equivalent information (WPI strategy plus BCE code
definitions) to a file rather than to paper. One could then edit the file
and have the code definitions in the same file as the strategy, making
editing easier. The exported file should be of type *.sc, so that once
edited, it could be run as a script file. This, of course, would not allow
export of the structure too, as the print to paper option does. Normally,
the file type *.sc would be ASCII text format to allow it to be run as a
script from STN Express, so it might not be a good idea to change the format
from ASCII just to allow the structure to be exported.

This would ease things when trying to represent a very complex Markush
structure. Since quite a few representative structures must be drawn to get
enough codes to represent the total query, having the BCE codes definitions
already printed out can make it easier to keep things straight as far as
which particular piece of the total query is represented by the particular
set of codes, possibly with additional annotations as needed. Mostly, it
just saves a lot of typing.

Thanks and Best Regards,
