NEW STN EASY OFFERS MORE VERSATILITY WITH LATEST WEB TECHNOLOGY
COLUMBUS, Ohio, June 11, 2000 - CAS and its STN colleagues have
redesigned STN Easy--the user-friendly web option for searching
selected files on the STN International network. Finding scitech
information with STN Easy will now be easier than ever. The new
STN Easy, scheduled for general release on June 25, features both
a streamlined look and more functionality to make better use of
the latest web technology and standards. CAS made the
announcement at the SLA Annual Conference in Philadelphia this
week.
STN Easy's new design includes three levels of searching to meet
the diverse needs of STN Easy users:
o Easy Search is designed for infrequent searchers looking for
general scitech information about a subject;
o Advanced Search provides users with the ability to look for
information in a specific scientific discipline. For searchers
who have complex queries, it also offers user-friendly interfaces
that provide more search power and precision;
o CAS Number Search offers a quick way to retrieve the CAS Number
(CAS Registry Number) for a chemical or to find chemical names
if the user already knows the CAS Registry Number.
"We enhanced STN Easy with our varied audience in mind,
recognizing the needs and preferences of both advanced users and
those looking for more basic searches," said CAS Marketing
Director, Suzan A. Brown. "Both groups will find STN Easy
serves them well with all the user-friendliness you expect from
the Web."
To support the new features and increased power of STN Easy, the
minimum browser level has been raised to version 4.0 or higher.
Javascript is now used extensively to reduce the time necessary
for the user's computer to create the STN Easy pages. STN Easy
is available at three different locations on the web: in North
America, http://stneasy.cas.org, in Japan,
http://stneasy-japan.cas.org/, or in Europe,
http://stneasy.fiz-karlsruhe.de.
CAS, a division of the American Chemical Society, is the world's
leader in providing scientists online and web access to
chemistry-related research data. CAS produces the world's
largest and most comprehensive databases of chemical
information. This information is combined with sophisticated
search and analysis software vital to new product and patent
research, as well as academic research in the world's leading
universities. The CAS databases include more than 19 million
abstracts of chemistry-related literature and patents and 24
million substance records. CAS publishes the print version of
Chemical Abstracts (CA), related publications and CD-ROM
services; operates the CAS Chemical Registry; produces a family
of online databases; and offers the SciFinder desktop research
tool. CAS operates STN International, a network of scientific
and technical databases, in association with FIZ Karlsruhe in
Germany and the Japan Science and Technology Corporation. The
CAS web site is at http://www.cas.org.
