PIUG-L members. I hope that moost have heard about the network worm that is
spreading through emails, ususally it is called a virus - VBS.LoveLetter.A.
I believe that some people have already mentioned this on PIUG-L, but I
deleted some of the mail to the group by accident so I am not sure what all
was relayed to the PIUG-L group.
In any event, the worm is still being circulated through the mailing list,
so beware especially if you are using Microsoft Outlook/Exchange as your
email system. This is unavoidable and can not be stopped. It is the way
that the majordomo software works - it keeps trying to repeatedly send mail
at various time intervals if a user's email system is busy, full or not
accepting email at the time of first sending. It tries to re-send multple
times until the email is inally rejected or the re-send finally times out.
In addition, the worm could also resurface again even after all copies are
done being propagated on PIUG-L. Many of the PIUG-L members are being
protected from this worm by their system's email gateway by the use of email
filters - see an example in the folling forwarded message. The attached
message is the reason that I am sending this message, since it indicates
that the worm is still attempting propagation.
For more information on the worm and how t protect yourself, please see the
following:

Beware of any attachments - I would suggest opening no email with
attachments until this worm passes or until you are sure that you have
adequate antivirus software in place to prevent the spread of this worm.
Attachments are not allowed on the PIUG mailing list, but there are ways
that attachments can find their way onto the list without a user meaning to
send an attachment, such as the method of propagation of the worm. Sorry
that not much more can be done at this point in time.
