Some incorrect rendering of characters by OCR is inevitable. DIALOG is
aware of the "claims" section misinterpretation in file 349 based on a
DIALOG Update session I attended last week, so let's hope they come up
with a solution for parsing the CLAIMS section of the PCT documents more
effectively. I agree that a price reduction is in order for file 349,
where a fulltext record costs roughly $7/fulltext record. Given that
Micropatent sells the full text with images as TIFF or PDF for
$4.95/document, DIALOG seems to be charging a considerable premium for
the text only! On the other hand, given how common PCT filings are in
international filing practice these days, and that many of those then
elect PCT-transfer to the EPO, file 349 on DIALOG and Micropatent's PCT
fulltext file fill an important gap in online retrieval. EP fulltext
databases seem all to lack "fulltext" for any PCT-transferred
applications until the EP filing reaches the B-stage of publication.
So, I'd encourage DIALOG to optimize a mapping routine for crossfiling
the application serial numbers between 349 & 348 to make obtaining the
PCT fulltext easier if one starts searching in 348, perhaps with a
special display command or reserved display format, and to create a more
complete PATENTS FULLTEXT ONESEARCH/DIALINDEX category, now that US, EP
& WO fulltext are available.

I have used STN Express to download from File 349. There did seem to
be some
garbage, but I assumed it was due to the way the data was obtained,
i.e. by OCR.
I wouldn't call it unreadable. What I find most annoying about this
file is the
inability of the system to properly distinguish the claims section of
each
document. The "claims" section seems to begin wherever the first
appearance is
of the word "claim" or "claims", even if it's in the first paragraph of
the
specification - this seems to apply to both searching and printing and
in my
opinion, DIALOG should lower their prices until/unless this is fixed,
since it
makes searching less accurate and involves printing out large amounts
of
unnecessary material.

Subject: FWD: Bug in DIALOG's new File 349
Non-member submission from [Diane Kozelka <dkozelka@chemdal.com>]
To fellow searchers of DIALOG:
Be aware that I've discovered a bug in File 349 (new PCT fulltext db
on
DIALOG) when using DIALOGLINK to access. This bug should not interfere
with
your ability to search the database, only in downloading the fulltext
results. If someone has tried using STN Express to access DIALOG's
file
349, I would appreciate knowing if the same problem occurs.
The bibliographic citation portion of the record seems unaffected, but
when
you start reading the downloaded specification, you will find the text
has
many errors in it and renders the text unreadable. I did make DIALOG
aware
of this problem and their temporary solution is to access this file
from
their DIALOGWEB interface. I have asked DIALOG to notify me when this
bug
is fixed.
