As it happens, I received a notification about this data only this
morning.
This states that:
"An indication of the validity of an Italian patent or utility model can
be deducted [sic] from the difference between these two dates [the PRS
action date and the 'last fee paid' date in the free text part of the
record] i.e. if the last payment was effected more than a year before
the report was made, it can be assumed that the patent or utility model
has lapsed."

It is planned to update this snapshot data at least once a year. A
similar system will be introduced to cover EP's designating IT, to
replace the obsolete listing which went in in 1995.
